The Candy Crush Maker: A Steady Performer

Candy Crush, one of the most popular mobile games of all time, has continued to perform well even three years after its release. According to recent reports, it has ranked third in Apple's top-grossing games list, making it a steady performer for King Digital Entertainment, the game's maker.

Despite Candy Crush's success, King has struggled to replicate this success with other games. The company has developed over 200 exclusive games and has a network of 330 million monthly users, but so far, none have come close to matching the popularity of Candy Crush.

In a recent move, Activision Blizzard Inc., a leading video game publisher, acquired King Digital Entertainment for $5.9 billion, making it the second largest game company in the world after Tencent. The deal is significant not only because of its value but also because it marks a major step into the mobile gaming market for Activision.

King's co-founder and CEO, Ricardo Zacconi, has emphasized that the company is more than just a one-hit wonder, citing three games in the top 10 on Facebook as evidence. However, some analysts have questioned whether King can repeat the success of Candy Crush, which has been far more successful than any other game it has developed.

Francis Gaskins, director of research for IPO Home and president of Equity Research, believes that Candy Crush is a maturing product, with consumers growing tired of it. He also pointed out that the history of game companies suggests that none can consistently introduce new products to grow revenue, making King a one-hit wonder in his opinion.

Despite these concerns, King's financial performance has been impressive, with $1.88 billion in revenue last year, over 10 times its 2012 revenue of $164.4 million. The company's other top games include Pet Rescue Saga and Farm Heroes Saga.
